What Is Edge Computing?

In principle, Edge Computing has a formidable field of application in business and industrial organizations. Internet of Things (IoT) devices collect a large amount of information, but they are limited to sending this data to the cloud, where it is processed to obtain certain information or events are triggered, which does not allow optimization of the speed of transmission.

But this can be improved by using Edge Computing, where information is stored very close to the data source (hence EDGE = edge of the network). Because the processing does not have to happen in the cloud, but locally, it is much faster, using less bandwidth, and reducing latency to a minimum.

If it is not necessary to send all this information to the cloud and it is the devices themselves that are in charge of processing it, allowing organizations to analyze it in real-time, something that is tremendously necessary for specific industries such as telecommunications, finance, or health.

Benefits Of This Technology

As we can see, all this results in benefits that must be taken into account:

  • Reduction of broadband costs by not having to upload data to the cloud at all times.
  • Lower latency, almost non-existent.
  • Greater agility and speed in the user’s decision-making.
  • Better security conditions by controlling the privacy of the information. Its storage occurs locally.
  • Improvement of the user experience.

Edge Computing Applications

Edge Marketing is going to have a wide diffusion in Information Technology circles :

  • Manufacturing industry: Analyze and prevent possible errors in the production chain.
  • In Agriculture and livestock: Monitoring in real-time the processes that are carried out.
  • In the mining and oil industry: Bringing analytics to the most remote places is one of the main challenges for Edge Computing.
  • Video games and multimedia content: Bringing data centers closer to the places where they are being consumed.
  • Energy Consumption: Edge-connected IoT devices are used to monitor and correct energy consumption in industries and businesses in real-time.
  • Using Edge in autonomous driving and traffic management.
  • Apply this technology to healthcare, enabling automated care and immediate responses to incidents.
  • For questions related to surveillance and response to possible anomalies, by studying images instantly, detecting any problem that occurs, whether they are natural disasters or terrorist attacks.

Although edge computing technologies promise great improvements in the field of IT, at the moment enterprise implementations are at a very early stage. Gartner experts point out that many current proofs of concept of edge technologies are not based on standardized architectures and, although there are initiatives in this regard, they have not yet achieved sufficient popularity.

Edge computing enables IT capabilities to be expanded beyond traditional boundaries, moving compute and storage capacity closer to the source of data and application users. In recent years, infrastructure providers have turned to the development of edge solutions, but a set of standards has not yet been established on which to base themselves to implement this type of technology.

According to Gartner experts, although many companies are experimenting with edge computing, at the moment the proofs of concept are not based on standardized standards, and they consider that this technology is still “very green”. In the opinion of Bob Gill, vice president of research in Gartner’s infrastructure strategy group, the current state of this technology resembles the early days of the cloud, when companies created their own applications without considering whether they met the requirements of the cloud. corporate governance standards, and in many cases were unable to share data with each other.

Speaking at Gartner’s latest conference on IT infrastructure, operations and cloud strategies in Asia Pacific, Gill said that by 2023 80% of enterprises will implement multiple incompatible technology stacks. That will be due to the lack of architectural standards for edge computing, but he believes that it is not sustainable to reinvent everything every time a new emerging technology emerges.

To avoid the problems this can cause, Gill says companies could adopt frameworks such as those established by the Linux Foundation’s LF Edge and EdgeX Foundry projects, or the Open Infrastructure Foundation’s StarlingX. This would provide them with useful elements to build a technology stack at the edge without being limited by incompatibility with the rest of their infrastructure.

It highlights the developments that have been carried out by large firms such as IBM, which has combined elements of EdgeX Foundry with capabilities of its own cloud services, which has allowed it to develop a framework for its edge computing offerings.

One of the priorities in this sense will be security, something that companies will have to solve in the next four or five years if they want to be successful in the implementation of edge infrastructure. Emerging technologies and practices such as Zero Trust and SASE come into play here, which can facilitate secure access to devices at the edge and ensure security conditions throughout the enterprise network, encompassing both the cloud and the on-premises data center and network.

In recent years, some technology giants such as Google, Microsoft, Intel and IBM have been working on what could mean a new technological revolution: quantum computing. Join me to discover what it is and its applications in the business world.

What Is Quantum Computing?

Superposition allows us to store many more possible states than classical bits, giving rise to the so-called “quantum bits” or qubits, and entanglement makes the operations in a given qubit affect the rest, thus saving the process of introducing bitwise changes.

The result is that we can operate with advanced algorithms such as quantum tempering and Shor’s algorithm with quantum computing. The first has many applications in artificial intelligence and machine learning, while the second allows for creating encryption systems that make the current ones obsolete.

For now, quantum computing is not a suitable tool for personal computers but is limited to the corporate, scientific and technological world due to its great complexity. But we already see very significant advances, and who knows if we will be able to have desktop computers or even quantum mobile devices in a few decades.

Seven Applications Of Quantum Computing For Companies

Data analysis

Quantum computing can help us solve problems on a previously unimaginable scale. For example, there is a field of study called “topological analysis” whose calculations are impossible to do with today’s computers due to the data set it uses. In contrast, with quantum computing, these calculations are relatively straightforward.

Predictions

Making predictions of different scenarios requires using large and complex data sets. For example, weather simulations using traditional computing methods limit the amount of data they can handle. If you enter too much data into the system, the simulation takes longer to run than change.

Properly predicting the weather can have a huge economic impact on businesses, with an estimated 30% of U.S. GDP being weather susceptible in one way or another. And of course, quantum computing can be applied to all kinds of predictions, not just meteorological ones, which opens up a great field of opportunities for companies.

Cryptographic Encryption

Advanced cryptography is one of the main application areas of quantum computing. Today’s computers are unable to crack ciphers that use large prime factorizations. In contrast, with quantum computing, these types of calculations become simple, allowing us both to protect our digital assets more efficiently and to decipher traditional crypto much faster.

Pattern Recognition

Recognizing patterns in data is extremely useful, as it allows us to predict when they will recur in the future more easily. An example of practical application for companies is to predict traffic in advance. Traffic is a very complex system, so it is beyond the reach of modern computers. But some companies like Volkswagen are already studying how they can use quantum computing to inform drivers of traffic conditions up to 45 minutes in advance.

Autonomous Cars

And speaking of traffic, another promising application of quantum computing is autonomous cars, which will improve people’s quality of life and reduce pollution and traffic jams, among many other benefits. Quantum computing will help them develop battery technology, transportation, and autonomous driving. Volkswagen has already optimized the traffic flow of 10,000 taxis in Beijing.

Aviation

Aircraft routing and scheduling is another example of a complex system. Optimizing it with the help of quantum computing would allow for much more sophisticated modeling and would have great benefits in both time and cost savings.

Medical Research

Last but not least, we have a sector that has become more important than ever after the Covid-19 pandemic: medical research. Let’s consider the billions of possibilities of interaction of a drug with our body and the billions of different people to whom that drug can be administered. We see that the calculations can quickly become overwhelming.

We are immersed in the middle of a digital wave that, little by little, is flooding our day to day, both in our personal lives and in our professional environment. Businesses change, the distance between the user and technology is narrowing, and what until very recently seemed like science fiction is now out of date in a few months. All corners of society must adapt to this new reality, especially organizations and companies, which must be at the forefront of this transformation to remain competitive in an increasingly voracious market.

And it is now more challenging to define the line that the information draws from the places where it originates to the different points where it is processed. The concept of the data center is increasingly broad, and today almost any of us could be an element in this chain, not only because of the amount of information we generate but because the devices that we carry with us in our day to day are capable of processing some of that information already.

This is how the Edge Computing model exploits, which we can define in a general way as everything that is neither in the central or core data center of an organization nor in the public cloud, although in reality, we must understand it as something significantly broader, like that intersection of the physical world and the digital world where information is generated, and value is obtained from it. Edge currently covers many environments, such as intelligent industrial factories, retail stores, oil rigs, wind turbines, or multi-mode connected vehicles.

In recent years, the trend that had prevailed during the last decades and that led to centralizing technology as much as possible has been reversed. The improvement in communications -exploding definitively with the incursion of 5G in all sectors of society-, as well as the appearance of a new cast of information sources that comes from the hand of the hyperconnected world and the Internet of things, have allowed applications, services and ultimately, a large part of the world’s technology and computing, to get closer to where things happen: the origin of the data.

Edge Computing is everything that is neither in the central or core data center of an organization. And this brings us to the keyword that drives the competitive world we live in today: immediacy. Organizations can now extract value from information and make decisions in real-time, improving and digitizing their processes, creating new lines of business, or simply taking technology where it could not go until now. Those companies that take advantage of the power of Edge Computing and know-how to deploy their services and infrastructure with agility according to new needs will be the ones that will be in a better position to face the digital race.

According to analysts, 80% of the information generated in 2025 will be done in places outside of what we would call a traditional data center. Gartner estimates that 50% of the infrastructure deployed in 2023 will be in Edge environments. And according to IDC, the number of applications running in settings of this nature is set to grow by a whopping 800% by 2024.

The new reality will imply a new model for many organizations, which will have to face the complexity posed by new paradigms and architectures, significant challenges in terms of security or the difficulty of maintaining consistency between all the elements of the stack. An edge environment is not an isolated environment, and it must meet the regulatory and organizational standards imposed by a particular market or organization. It must adapt and scale in an agile and efficient way, and it must be integrated into the existing ecosystem with guarantees.

And this is where it will be vital to mark a strategy that combines simplicity and security, which understands that this type of deployment must coexist both with large on-premises infrastructures and with the different public cloud services that coexist in the technological map of most corporations. And we must seek simplicity with the consumption of end-to-end solutions and integrated and packaged platforms that simplify deployments and operation.

It also guarantees the integrity of all the elements, their security and their availability -something complex in a horizon in which there are more and more computing points and information sources- and maintaining standards and homogenizing infrastructure, processes and control planes. The challenge is immense, and the time is now. The challenge of taking advantage of the possibilities that technology offers us today makes Edge Computing.

With the rise of Digital Transformation, many organizations talk about this concept, but are we sure what this means and how it affects all areas of our business? Sometimes this lack of understanding is due to distorting obstacles to its development, such as ignorance of all the benefits it brings, the lack of an exact model for the company, the lack of digital culture, and the lack of budgets for the development of the company.

Digital Transformation supposes a revolution within an organization: the emergence of new strategies to strengthen its procedures and new business models as the majority component in the change in senior managers’ mentality. This metamorphosis is being required for the survival of any business, with a transformation of operational processes and a comprehensive and complete vision in analyzing reality.

The development of infrastructure, applications, and processes that support our business is dazzling. Removing barriers is that there are increasingly better and more efficient technologies to carry out transformation. These barriers used to force people to use local resources. The ability of local resources to adapt to changing market conditions is affected by three factors:

  • The operational and professional capabilities of the IT team
  • The ability to add or remove computing hardware and software resources on demand
  • And the high cost of communication infrastructure and security requirements.

As a cross-technology strategy that supports Digital Transformation processes in our business, Cloud Computing allows the use of disruptive technologies to generate high value-added services. Cloud Computing allows removing some barriers in terms of specialization, productivity, and costs.

Our team has the agility and flexibility necessary to move forward and solve the market and the economy’s problems. Today, cloud computing and operations have become vital elements to support and achieve short, medium, and long-term business objectives.

Some Key Aspects Of Cloud Computing Are:

  • Flexibility. Depending on each business’s needs, different cloud integration strategies and custom microservices can provide specific adaptive capabilities.
  • Scalability The cloud’s operational benefits include reducing time-to-market for products and services and connecting and collaborating across multidisciplinary teams around the world while increasing efficiency and productivity.
  • Personalization. One of the advantages of cloud computing is the agility to implement innovative products and services. Small and medium-sized companies can afford comfortable growth, while large companies can create and expand their investments.

This approach enables us to take advantage of new technologies’ inherent benefits and complexity to focus our efforts on achieving short, medium, and long-term business objectives.

Cloud computing is becoming more and more interesting for companies, but many companies are still skeptical about the storage of data. Private users are often more open-minded and above all take advantage of the opportunity to outsource data. The basic question for companies is: How secure is the cloud?

Safety first

Companies work with sensitive data every day. No matter whether it is your customers’ contact information or new product developments that may not yet be patented. Data and knowledge are important assets and must be well secured accordingly. Companies fear that their data in the cloud is not sufficiently protected. 30% fear unauthorized access to sensitive data. Fear of data loss follows with 20%, closely followed with 19% who fear that important IT know-how will be lost. More than 50% of companies also say they find it more difficult to protect data in the cloud. Opposed to that that almost 70% of the companies had no security-related incidents with the cloud and around 10% only had suspicions about security gaps. This feeling of insecurity among companies not only means that many have so far refrained from doing so, they do not entrust all data to cloud services.

In principle, companies are increasingly open to the topic, but it is used much less frequently. Just under 20% entrust sensitive data to a cloud service. If information is stored in a cloud, it is mostly information that is not business-critical. If there is a loss or data theft, the damage to a company is relatively minor.

leaders so far

If you look at the ranking of companies by country, Finland is at the top with almost 70%. Denmark and Sweden follow with around 50% of companies using cloud services. With just under 20% usage, Germany is far behind in comparison. But cloud computing is also carried out in Germany. There are around 3.4 million companies in Germany, 65% of which use at least cloud computing. The possibilities of which services can be used are diverse. So far, Amazon has been one of the largest providers of cloud infrastructure. This is in direct contrast to the customer request because many companies want their provider to be based at least in the EU. This would also increase the feeling of security because companies want data security to be guaranteed.

There is a lot to be said for the cloud

However, there are many reasons to choose cloud computing. This includes, for example, the possibility of a home office. So far, only a good 20% of workers have the opportunity to work at home. For companies, however, an expansion would mean that it is easier to get qualified personnel because they can address people in a much larger area. They would also be able to save on infrastructure costs themselves since significantly smaller office space would be required. In general, cloud computing would save them a lot of costs because they would receive customized solutions and would only have to pay for what they use.

There are different types of Cloud Computing. Among them, we have the public cloud, the private cloud, and the hybrid cloud, as we already described in a previous article. Those are the three basic types of cloud that a company can adopt, but there is one more trend, the Multicloud, which we will go on to describe.

Before starting, we must say that Hybrid Cloud is often confused with Multicloud, and vice versa. Actually, they are two very different things that are defined by subtle differences. Let’s see, first, what is Hybrid Cloud.

Hybrid Cloud is understood as the combination of dedicated and public resources or, what is the same, the integration of Private and Public Cloud services. The key in this definition is “integration”.

We can talk about three approaches to configure a Hybrid Cloud:

  • Contract the services of two different providers and integrate the solutions.
  • Hire a single provider that offers both services.
  • Set up your own private cloud in the company and integrate an external public cloud service.
  • As for Multicloud, it is a solution in which cloud services from different providers are combined, and these services may or may not be connected to each other or integrated.

At MultiCloud we manage various environments as if it were a complete architecture. In these environments, resources and infrastructures belonging to multiple providers are shared and connected.

The difference is fundamental because Multicloud provides companies with a plus of flexibility that is not so pronounced in hybrid cloud schemes. Through the Multicloud philosophy, a company can add services and providers of these as it is needed.

Of course, the following must be taken into account if we are going to enter the Multicloud world:

  • MultiCloud requires more effort in terms of security and management. It is a more complex concept than the hybrid cloud due to its distributed nature in terms of supplier diversity.
  • MultiCloud can create adaptation difficulties in the organization.
  • This solution will only generate added value in the company if the appropriate suppliers are chosen.
  • In a sense, Multicloud can be said to be the future of the Hybrid Cloud. For many companies that dare to go digital, Multicloud is an excessively complex option, but in the long term it is where the Cloud will tend.

“Serverless Computing” although it is not the best way to do it. It is a cloud computing execution model in which the cloud provider runs the server and dynamically manages the allocation of machine resources.

This, simplifying, means that it is a fully managed service. That is to say, it allows us to forget about the servers and their management, of the operating system … From the point of view of application development, it is as if there is nothing below.

Therefore, it is not necessary to explicitly reserve server instances as it does with PaaS services or, of course, in the case of IaaS. It is the platform, the provider, who does this automatically and transparently for users.

It is a type of service that fits very well for workloads that respond to incoming events. For example, by means of timers that allow executing a function every day at a certain time, order processing queues, etc. This feature allows billing to be normally also based on when the code is executed. That is, you only pay for use, but for use in an execution .

The serverless computing goes one step beyond what is known as architecture microservices, which is nothing more than “an approach to software development is to build an application as a set of small services, which are running on your own process and communicate with light mechanisms ». The downside of this microservice architecture is that it increases the work of infrastructure management and maintenance, something that is solved thanks to “serverless” computing.

In this way, from the developer’s point of view, the only thing that really matters is to define each functionality and each business logic. The rest is up to the cloud service provider. Therefore, these types of functions allow you to focus on the applications, and not on the management or configuration of the servers. Therefore, the activity will be more productive and, as an “extra ball”, the cost can be significantly reduced.

One of the best-known implementations of this type of architecture is FaaS — Functions as a Service—. Many times FaaS is identified as serverless architecture and, therefore, its characteristics are described in the same way. FaaS can also be seen as “code execution as a service”.

Like everything else, serverless computing has its advantages – already commented -, and these are some of its disadvantages or limitations:

  • Vendor lock-in, it is difficult to migrate from one provider to another.
  • There is a limitation of the maximum execution time of a function, and also a limitation of the maximum size of the function.
  • It is possible that the execution will suffer latencies if it is its first execution or if it has not been executed for a long time.
  • It is a closed environment managed by third parties, so it is not possible to make customizations or optimizations.
