Gold Prospecting – Where to Go and How it Works

Many people associate gold prospecting with that of the Gold Rush of the 1840s. However, gold prospecting is still going on throughout the world. There are various different countries where this takes place, and the methods that are used for this form of mining for gold are simple.

This method of mining for gold is a simple one that requires very little equipment. It works in that a miner, or prospector in this case, goes to a stream bed or rocks in large areas to find gold. The people who do this activity are generally those who do not have all of the experience in mining that professionals would have. However, this is reasonable in that prospecting is an especially simple process. The main goal of this involves being able to get to the right locations for finding gold.

Mining for gold in this form involves being able to find the right gold mining locations. Many people associate this with the western part of North America, and this is still the case to this day. The northern part of California is one of the best places in this area to see here. One of the most notable discoveries from mining for gold here came in 1859 when the Dogtown Nugget was mined. This fifty-four pound nugget is the largest ever found in the state. Various different areas, including Alaska and British Columbia, have some gold areas, but there are primarily in the more remote parts of these areas.

The eastern part of the United States is known for gold as well. Before the Gold Rush people would go prospecting for gold in Georgia, the Carolinas and the Virginias. While some people still do this, especially in the more mountainous parts of these states out west, this is not generally the case in most cases.

Different parts of the world have gold prospecting sites, but there are some laws involved in these areas. In the United Kingdom prospectors can not go mining for gold without the permission of the proprietor of a riparian zone, which is an area between land and a flowing source of water. Also, any damages to the water that can cause pollution as a result of the mining is a crime.

In Australia there are some rules involving prospecting as well. A miners permit must be acquired from the country's Mining Department. When the prospector gets this permit any gold that is found is officially the property of the person who discovered it and not of the Australian government.

Gold prospecting is an especially exciting activity. The method of mining for gold here is especially easy to do, and there are various different gold mining locations throughout the world. Who knows, maybe there is still some huge Dogtown Nugget-sized gold pieces left in the world to find!
