Gold in Alaska – Finding the Treasure in the Last Frontier
Ever since the United States acquired Alaska from Russia in the nineteenth century many people have gone mining for gold in that area. There are all sorts of great places to find gold here, and gold in Alaska has been an especially strong industry.
One of the most notable parts of gold in Alaska involves the creeks in the Nome area. In the later part of the nineteenth century gold was first found in this area in the creeks there. In 1899 nearly two million dollars of gold was mined in this area. While much of the gold from this area has been taken out there is still some gold to be found there.
In the western part of the state the Seward Peninsula has various areas for gold mining. Much of the mining here is professional, but there are also independent prospectors who are looking for gold in the waters of the area. The Rock Creek Project is one of the most notable parts of mining in this area. This include the Rock Creek and Big Hurrah Mines.
In Fairbanks there are still places to find gold, and more sources are being found there. The Pogo Mine is one of the newest areas for gold. Located about a hundred miles southeast of the town of Fairbanks, this mine was found nearly ten years ago.
Closer to Fairbanks is the Fort Knox Mine. This mine is open all of the time to people who are looking to find gold, and hundreds of professional gold miners work here everyday.
There are some groups that regulate mining in this area. The Fairbanks Gold Mining Incorporated group is one of the main groups in terms of mining for gold. This group works to employ people and to maintain gold mining activities in the Fairbanks area. Hundreds of thousands of troy ounces of gold are mined every year under the jurisdiction of this group.
Some more mines are expected to be open for mining for gold in the near future. The Nilback Project, which will be near the Prince of Wales Island, will be a mine that features not only gold but also silver, zinc and copper, which have been found in this area during its discovery. Also, the Pebble Mine in Bristol Bay has had various deposits of gold and copper found in its discovery.
